Dean was... worried. Well, not really scared-worried, but butterflies-flying-wildy-around-in-his-tummy-worried. He fingered the wand in his pocket. Mum had told him to put it in the trunk, but... wow, he didn't really believe all this was happening, and the wand somehow made it real for him. So he had nodded and said he would pack it, only to pocket when she had turned her back. She was probably worried he would hurt himself.
She'd been very silent and somehow twitchy when they had been to Diagon Alley a few days ago. A very nice man - oh no, a wizard!!! WOWOW - had took them there to get the books, and all that totally COOOOOL stuff, he would need at Hogwarts. Damn...Hogwarts, school of bloody WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY. How effing COOL was that, huh? He smiled faintly to himself. Dad had been totally cool, chatting away, watching all the funny people with Dean, while mum had constantly asked the nice man - WIZARD!! - in that small voice, if everything was safe and good and nice and not dangerous and and and. Dean had laughed at her. A mistake, since she had almost slapped him. He could see it in her eyes. Not that she ever had done that, but for a second he really thought she would. That had told him how scared she was. Didn't she see how cool it all was? He was a WIZARD!!! He would be doing MAGIC!!! Nothing could be better.
Although... he would be living at that school, and not at home. And he didn't know a single soul. And Abdi and Michael and Philip had been ... he didn't know. They had just said bye, and then ran off together to play... without him. And he wouldn't see them before. Oh... damn. He wouldn't go home again before Christmas. He trailed slightly behind his parents as he fell into thoughts. He wouldn't see anybody before Christmas. Not dad, not mum, not grandma, not Philip, not Michael and not Abdi. His stomach clenched and he had to swallow not to cry. Dad talked to him and he quickly plastered on a small smile. No way, mum and dad would say he should stay if he was unhappy with it all. He was just nervous. Nothing else, just that. It would be cool. He was sure there wouldn't be any problems and nobody would look twice because he was coloured. He would find friends, lots even. It would be a fresh start, and all were probably used to do their absolute best, so nobody would call him names for getting good grades and doing all his homework... nobody.
He looked careful around, and everything was confusion. Children and oddly dressed people rushed around them and it had been slightly strange to go through that wall. They had entered just behind that short babbly boy and his parents, but the dizziness they had all experienced when they went through, had made him lose sight of him. Dean had seen him shortly before, when they had entered the station. He had liked the smile and the way the boy seemed to just love EVERYTHING, as if the world was one huge cake, and he just wanted to eat it all.
Oh..mum was talking to him, telling him to be a good boy and behave and do his homework and write often and not talk back at the teachers and and and... he just nodded and smiled. The smile almost faltered when mum suddenly just stopped talking and hugged him so tightly, he couldn't breathe for a few moments and he would've sworn her eyes were looking moist. Dean's eyes widened. Mum didn't cry...she just didn't, 'cause he could take that Dad was almost bawling right now, telling him that he loved him and that he would write and make mum bake him muffins and send them... but that look on Mum's face.... Don't cry, don't cry... please don't cry. She didn't, just stroked his short-cropped hair and kissed him on the cheek. He almost said 'ew, don't kiss me muuum', like he usually did, but ... he couldn't. "Love you, mum" he whispered and kissed her cheek back. Then he hugged dad tightly and suddenly everything went really fast. A loud whistle and he had to step the rest of the way into the train and the door closed and he waved like mad as the train slowly gained speed and left the station.
So...this was it. He was alone, and ... he didn't really like it. Silently he looked around, and it seemed everybody knew each other. Just, nobody knew Dean and nobody wanted to know him, maybe. He fondled the wand and wondered if this was a good idea. Ok, he was a wizard, and that was bloody brilliantly cool... but he was also alone, for the first time ever. And he was not that good at making good friends. He sighed and started walking down the hallway, looking into the compartments as he passed them. All of them were occupied with at least two persons, and all seemed to be talking like old friends to each other. He paused a bit outside the compartment with a redhead who looked kind and a rather skinny, smaller boy with glasses, who looked as if this was the greatest adventure ever. But... they were talking to each other and he didn't want to intrude. He was nearing the end of the train, and had almost decided to just stay in the hallway for the ride when the absolute last compartment was empty. He slipped inside and sat down, just looking out the window for a while. It would be cool. When he got there, he would be in classes with the others, and surely they would talk then, and he would get friends... He looked away from the window when he heard some slightly raised voices in the next compartment. Curiosity got the better of him, and he slipped into the hallway. He would just take a small peek, just to see what was goi....
"Ooph..." he was almost flattened against the wall by the boy stumbling out of the door, but he managed to keep his balance. The other boy hadn't, and was now sitting on his arse. Dean almost jumped when the boy proclaimed him to be a WIZARD - and yes, it was almost shouted - and was smiling and babbling and totally funny. He reached out his hand and helped him up - and his name was Seamus...Seamus Finnigan - nodding politely to the endless stream of words, and even though he didn't really pay attention to what the boy... Seamus said, 'cause he was steering him into his compartment, he still somehow understood it all, and even laughed slightly. He couldn't help himself. It seemed like Seamus was somewhat out of a place to stay as well. Dean couldn't understand why. The babble was nice and warm and felt good and the look in Seamus' eyes was also warm, and Dean liked him right away. Liked the way he talked and was happy, even when things hadn't worked out with the other people. He also liked the smile, almost too big for the face, like the eyes, so wide and amazed at everything.
When Seamus finally had to breathe, Dean took the chance to introduce himself and instantly found himself pounced and hugged almost as tightly at mum had hugged him. And wow.... friends? He hugged back and looked at Seamus as he smiled widely. He couldn't help it, the totally happy expression on Seamus' face made him. He had a friend. A funny one, nice one even. Maybe this had been a good idea after all... Maybe he would have an excellent time and make lots of friends and not miss home, if he had a friend like Seamus.
This was going to be SUPER COOL!
